Friday LinkFrogging – 4/29/11

I came to a realization this week.

That realization?  That my kids are getting older and at some point I’m going to have to explain the noble pursuit that is GonzoGeek to them.

Sure, they understand that dear old dad and some of his friends have a website, but they don’t really understand what that means or involves.  It became even more apparent the other night when, upon looking at the forthcoming design of our update, they asked me why we had girls in bikinis on there.

That led us into a discussion of traffic and hits.  It also led to so seriously glazed eyes.

What?  Why yes, I did mention an update.  Thanks for paying attention.

We’ve been promising an updated website since the end of 2010 and now, dear reader(s), its arrival is imminent.  Imminent as in Monday I’m told.  When you drop by on Monday you should see a whole new look for us here at the ‘Geek.  Its a change we’re VERY excited about.

And that’s not our only big news.

We are currently in discussions with a certain columnist.  If things go well, he’ll be bringing you his musings on all things sporting and entertaining.

But wait!  There’s more.

Just this very morning we got confirmation that a quartet of your favorite Geeks will be attending Comic-Con International in San Diego (Whale’s Vagina for all you German speakers out there) in July.  More details on that in the coming weeks.  Just know that we’ve been planning that one for a while and we’re all VERY excited about the chance to attend and report on the premiere Geek event of the year.

Don’t worry, we won’t forget to dance with who brung us.

Cheesecake anyone?

This week’s selection comes from Aamir.  Here’s what he had to say about her…

This week’s Cheesecake is Anna “Aya” Stefanowicz, vocalist for the Polish band UNSUN.  Aya is married to Maurycy “Mauser” Stefanowicz, who is the guitar player for UNSUN and ex-member of the highly lauded Polish death metal outfit called VADER.  She’s got a great voice, is very easy on the eyes, and has a really cute Eastern European accent.  UNSUN are easily and quickly tagged with the “Gothic-Metal” stamp, but I feel they are a lot more accessible than that.  The music is heavy, but the melodies and arrangements are rooted in Pop sensibility.  The latest UNSUN record is called “Clinic For Dolls” and was released in October of 2010.  The production is killer sounding and the songs are catchy, really fun and kinda kitchy too…but who doesn’t like a little bit of cheese now and then.

Well done, Aamir.  Well done.

At the time of recording, however, no-one really knew what was going on, and it seemed like a very real possibility.]

Friday LinkFrogging – 4/22/11

Good Friday to you all.

We’re back to once again take a trip to the corners of the internet, both sacred and profane. Why?  Because its what we do.  We’re digital explorers.  We bring ‘em back alive and let you view from behind the glass.

Earlier this week, I was lamenting to the missus that I hadn’t come up with a suitable cheesecake selection for this week.  We haven’t hit the summer movie season which makes my life SO much easier and nobody has done anything new and/or mock worthy.

My wife, who gets the feature, said, “you know, this weekend is associated with rabbits. Why don’t you use someone who’s been a Playboy bunny?”

Or words to that affect.

Smart woman my wife.

Say hello to Jenny McCarthy won’t you?

Ms. McCarthy first rose to fame as the 1993 Playmate of the Year.  From there she moved into television, most notably as the co-host of MTV’s Singled Out.  It was there that she honed her brassy broad persona.  Since then she’s acted steadily in the movies and on television.  It hasn’t all been rosy.  Her 2006 movie Dirty Love was eviscerated by the critics and took home a wagon full of Razzies.

In recent years, Ms. McCarthy has become an outspoken autism advocate.

Friday LinkFrogging – 4/15/11

Greetings from the Land of ‘Geek kids.

Today would normally be Tax Day, but since Washington, D.C. is closed down for Emancipation Day (?) you’ve got until Monday to “render unto Caesar.”

Until then, why don’t you let us take your mind off all that with some links and cheesecake.

This week’s selection is the very rare double dip.  True, we’ve been featuring two pictures of our weekly selections for some time now, but today, for only the second time ever, we’ll be featuring two different ladies.

Why?

Simple really.

Scream 4 opens today and as Wes Craven attempts to resurrect his Ghostface slasher franchise, we thought we’d do our part by featuring the ladies most associated with the franchise.

First up, above, say hello to Courtney Cox.

The former Friend and current resident of Cougar Town (make your own joke.  They do.), Ms. Cox plays intrepid reporter Gale Weathers in the series.  She’s been stalked by the Ghostface killer and David Arquette.  She escaped the killer, but got knocked up and cheated on by Arquette.  I don’t think that would have happened if she’d stuck with Bat-Man.  He’s single-minded that way.

Recently, the paparazzi caught her in the nearly obligatory “nip slip” while on vacation.  Never one to miss an opportunity, David Letterman asked about the incident while showing the picture on his show earlier this week.  Good thing he’s a friend of Bat-Man.

That’s Michael Keaton kids.

Up next, we’ve got Neve Campbell.  Ms. Campbell plays Sidney Prescott, the de facto heroine of the Scream movies.  She also spent some time with the Salinger five and practicing her Craft.  Still, perhaps her most famous non-Screamy cinematic moment is likely her pool makeout with former cheesecake/Mrs. Sheen, Denise Richards in Wild Things.

That’s why they make the Google kids.

Sketch of the Day: Lanterns & Supes and Bats, oh my!

So, I’m sitting at the computer waiting for some files to download and the service tech to come back to the phone.  There’s people dropping by asking me to fix things for them and because I’m not talking on the phone in my ear they just assume I’m not really on it.

Wish I was joking.

Here’s today’s quick sketches.

In brightest day, in blackest night, Geoff Johns will not escape my sight

I am the Mannydamm Batman!

Wait, what? I drew him with real legs and not those stumpy midget legs I've been doing?

I kind of like the Batman, and might run him through the cleanup mill at some point.  Hal looks like an X-Baby.

Friday LinkFrogging – 4/8/11

A tremendous Friday to you all.

Yes, I just dropped some Rome on you.  What can I say?  Its Smackoff Friday and I just back to the office after running some errands.  The calls were well above par so far and if there’s anything we like here, its good smack.

Well, that and cheesecake.

See what I did there?

Clever, I know.

While you sit there dazzled by epic wordplay, say hello to this week’s cheesecake, Jennifer Garner.

Ms. Garner stars opposite Russell Brand in the new version of Arthur that opens today.  I’m frankly sick of the commercials and ready for this thing to hit the screen already.  I’ve never been sure that there was a need to remake Arthur in the first place.  Dudley Moore knocked that one out of the park like an 8-year-old did to my machine pitch team last night…3 times.

Still, despite my misgivings on the remake, Ms. Garner’s geek cred is solid.  She began her career playing a scantily clad spy in Alias.  Then she moved on, showing her range by playing a leather clad ninja in both Daredevil and Elektra.  She took a swing at Tom HanksBig with 13 Going on 30 and helped out a girl in trouble in Juno.

Since then she’s gone on to MILF status, a series of rom-coms and marriage to the Man Without Fear (as evidenced by his role in Gigli), Ben Affleck.

One final thought on the Arthur remake.

Do you think Katy Perry is going to do a brassy pop version of “Arthur’s Theme“?  Seems like a no brainer to me.

Right now, the best that we can do is hit the links.

Rack me. Continue reading

Friday LinkFrogging – 4/1/11

Welcome back kids.

Now that most of the Gonzo Compadres have recovered from their varietal trips to SXSW, we’re back and getting down to it.  Well most of us anyway.  John is in Hotlanta this weekend for Wrestlemania.  Its his first trip to the big event despite a lifelong obsession with the squared circle.

Sure, the Final Four is this weekend, and we’ll be keeping an eye on that, but we’re Geeks.  We still enjoy the glory of the squared circle too.

Well, maybe not as much as we did before the McMahonopoly homogenized the product to the point of monotony, but still, its the biggest weekend of the year for fans of rasslin’ and/or sports entertainment.

So, in honor of ‘Mania (and at the suggestion of frequent hand model David Cantu), we’re pleased to present this week’s cheesecake.  Say hello to Trish Stratus.

Ms. Stratus began her career  as a fitness model (whatever that means) in Canada before making the move to the WWF/E.  There she donned a trench coat, cowboy hat and the managerial reins of the infamous tag team T&A (subtle Vince).  In the anything goes Attitude Era, Trish often found herself in the middle of very sexually oriented storylines.  I would imagine an entire generation of American boys hit puberty when she debuted the Stratusfaction.

After a very successful WWE career, Trish retired, sort of.  She’s making a return to the “E” next week as one of the coaches on Tough Enough, the WWE’s answer to The Ultimate Fighter.  Watch as Trish, Steve Austin, Booker T and Hugh Morrus (really??) train the next generation of WWE talent.

No word yet on who will give them their buzzcuts and tribal tats.

Jibbies & Loond – Episode 004 – SXSW 2011, Pt. 1

Following just days after their Motorhead odyssey, Jibbies and Loond returned to Austin for SXSW 2011, and put the young’uns to shame with their stamina, tenacity, and liver power, like two superheroes powered by METAL!, rock, and alcohol.  Loond got things started on Thursday afternoon at Emo’s with the Full Metal Texas day party. After the day-time bludgeoning it was time for the Small Stone Records showcase at Barbarella, which took J&L into the wee hours of the night.

Friday afternoon J&L were at Headhunters for the Small Stone Records day party and spent that night at The Dirty Dog Bar for the Metalliance showcase. Saturday afternoon at The Scoot Inn brought our metallic duo the Tee Pee Records/Converse/Thrasher Magazine day party and as the sun was setting found them once again in the wonderful confines of Stubb’s for Tres Mts. The night was capped by a raging party set from Valient Thorr at Barbarella.

Aside from being steeped in fabulous music for four days, we consumed large quantities of Lone Star beer, sampled a variety of street food, went on missions to evacuate our bowels in the most decent restrooms we could find, hung out with some great fools, and saw some of the most vast/varied array of female deliciousness the eye can see.  It was an absolutely incredible time, so have a listen to the show for all the gory details, and as we promised…some voices other than ours. - Loond

[Editor’s note: Part 1, presented here, follows J&L through the Small Stone day party and includes interviews with Jeff Martin (Lo-Pan), Erik Larsen (the Might Could, Parasytic, ex-Alabama Thunderpussy), Keith Gibbs (Sasquatch) and Scott Hamilton (President, Small Stone Recordings). Part 2 is already under construction.]

RIP

Welcome back  boys and girls.

All the Geeks are back from Austin and, in my case, points further south.  Thanks to Matt for holding down the fort whilst I was in sunny Naples, Florida working as arm candy and dancing with the blue agave (which is quite different than Dancing at the Blue Iguana).

I didn’t go to SXSW, but I did manage to squeeze in an MLB Spring Training Game between the Red Sox and the Mets.  The baseball gods and StubHub smiled down on me as it was the annual St. Patrick’s Day game in Fort Myers.  Much green was worn.  Many pasty Chowds where burnt and I learned, to my surprise, that in Boston they sing “Sweet Caroline” during the seventh inning stretch.

Things are weird out there kids, just the way we like it.

So it was surreal this week when it was announced that Elizabeth Taylor had died at the age of 79.  I also knew that this enduring Hollywood legend was a shoo-in for this week’s cheesecake.

Ms. Taylor has been a part of the pop culture landscape for my entire life.  Granted, it was the back end of her career.  The Michael Jackson-White Diamonds part of her career, but still.

After debuting at nine in There’s One Born Every Minute, she went on to spend her entire life in the spotlight.  I suggested to Stephe yesterday that Ms. Taylor may have been the first movie star to go wire-to-wire as a celebrity.

It also occurred to me that, had Ms. Taylor risen to fame in the age of the internet, she would have been a tabloid darling that left Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton in the dust.  Between winning a pair of Oscars, she managed eight marriages (including two consecutive ones to Richard Burton), a friendship with Michael Jackson, five broken backs, a benign brain tumor and a USO tour with Bob Hope.

They don’t make ‘em like that anymore kids.

Rest in Peace Ms. Taylor.
