Watch the Trailer for TROLLHUNTER Now

TROLLHUNTER is the story of a group of Norwegian film students that set out to capture real-life trolls on camera after learning their existence has been covered up for years by a government conspiracy. A thrilling and wildly entertaining film, TROLLHUNTER delivers truly fantastic images of giant trolls wreaking havoc on the countryside, with darkly funny adherence to the original Norwegian folklore.

TROLLHUNTER screened at both the Tribeca an Sundance film festivals.  It will be available on Magnolia On-Demand May 6th and in theaters starting June 10th.

You can watch the trailer after the jump. (more…)

Friday LinkFrogging – 11/19/10

There is nothing quite like a weekend amongst your own kind to really make you appreciate things like our little corner of the internet here.

Stephe and I will be reporting on our adventures in the wilds of the Austin Comic Con soon, but let me just say it was fun.  From aging television stars to costumes to fine tequilas, we had a blast.

It made the real world all the more difficult this week.

I’ve salved my soul with Bruce Springsteen‘s new release, The Promise, and the search for the perfect cheesecake for this week’s entry.

I thought about using the now “of age” Emma Watson, but let’s be honest, that still seems pervy.

A couple of movies opened last week.  There was Morning Glory starring candidate, Rachel McAdams.

There was also Unstoppable starring, Denzel Washington, Captain Kirk 2.o and Rosario Dawson.

I guess you can tell who won out.

I was conflicted so I discussed the choice with fan/handmodel, David Cantu (@davebot5k).  We agreed that Ms. Dawson had the higher geek cred.

Don’t believe me?  Check out her resume.

Kevin Smith movie?  Check.  Quentin Tarantino movie?  Check.  Rob Zombie movie?  Check.  Robot Chicken?  Check.

She’s also appeared in Men in Black II, Percy Jackson & The Olympians:  The Lightning Thief, Sin City and Josie and the Pussycats.

She’s made movies with Iron Man, the Rock, Stifler, Donkey, the Hulk and Bullseye.

All this and she’s a huge comic book geek, having created and published her own book a few years ago.

Yes, Ms. Dawson is a card carrying geek girl and a welcome addition to the gallery.

On to the links. (more…)

Friday LinkFrogging – 10/29/10

Don't even TRY to put Baby in the corner.

Its almost Halloween.

As Count Floyd would say “Ohhh…spooky kids.”

Seriously, is there a better holiday than Halloween.  You get to dress up in a costume and, depending on your predilictions and/or guts, live out your fantasies, all while begging for food.

Think about it, if the guy under the freeway with the cardboard sign rang your doorbell on November 1st, you’d call 9-1-1.  He does it one night before?  He’s a really authentic looking (and smelling) hobo.  Here, have some bite size Snickers.

Hell, you might even ask him to pose with your kids for a picture.

But, if there is anything we learned from the Firefly family, its that its not necessarily the scary hobos you have to look out for.

And with that rather ham-fisted segue, please say hello to this week’s cheesecake, Sherri Moon Zombie.

Sherri is probably best known for her work as Baby Firefly in House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects.  She also starred as the mother of Michael Myers in Rob’s two “reimagined” Halloween movies.

She’s laid pretty low since Halloween II, but after serving as Rob Zombie‘s wife and white trash muse for the last decade, we thought she’d be the perfect cheesecake for Halloween this year.

On to the links.

Friday LinkFrogging – 10/1/10

Happy Birthday to us!

Why?

Simply put, today is the one year anniversary of the debut of LinkFrogging.  What started out as a fun idea, has grown into one of our most looked at features and a highlight of my week.

The boys and I are always on the lookout for fun, offbeat stories to bring you.  We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we enjoy hunting them down.

Of course, no discussion of LinkFrogging would be complete without a mention of the cheesecake, our weekly visual aid to help the links go down.

Earlier this week, our very first cheesecake, Kaley Cuoco, revealed that she had a behind the scenes relationship with co-star Johnny Galecki.  I wonder how John Ritter would have felt about that?

What does that have to do with anything?  Not much really.  It just goes to prove that, given the right circumstances, you can draw lines between any events.

On to this week’s cheesecake.  Say hello to Lea Michele from Glee.  Ms. Michele plays Rachel Berry, the lead on the America’s favorite glee club inspired sing along.

Glee hit new ratings highs this week with the appearance of guest star, Britney Spears.  Soundtracks have been released.  Tours have been undertaken.  Jane Lynch won an Emmy for her portrayal of evil PE coach, Sue Sylvester.  The show has become a monster hit for Fox, America’s home for football and karaoke.

I’ve heard the fans of this show refererred to as Gleetards.  That doesn’t seem fair.  As we say around here, “everyone is a geek about something.”  Yes, I’m looking at you fantasy football guy.  And I’m looking at you Twilight fan.  And I’m looking at you Sex and the City movie goers.

Fans call themselves Gleeks.  I like this much better.  Its a clever way of commenting on their fandom and keeps with the show’s themes.  Of course, they aren’t the first Gleeks in pop culture history are they?  Don’t remember?  Shame on you.  You’ll have to wait until after the links for bonus Gleeky goodness. Hatchet II Coming to Theaters Unrated

There will be no Electric Boogaloo

Next Friday, October 1, 2010, Hatchet II is hitting theaters and is doing so without the blessing of the MPAA.  Rather than edit their movie down to get an approved rating, the folks involved with Hatchet II chose to release the movie unrated.

This will probably limit the number of theaters where you can see the movie, but it will undoubtedly increase the demand to see what all the fuss is about.

Hatchett II is the sequel to 2007′s Hatchet.  It picks up right where the original left off:

Marybeth (Danielle Harris from HALLOWEEN) escapes from the clutches of the deformed, swamp-dwelling killer Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder from FRIDAY THE 13th). Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and exact her revenge against Victor Crowley.

Director Adam Green had this to say about the decision to release the movie unrated:

Having a movie as graphically over the top as HATCHET II come out in major theatres unrated is an absolute dream come true — not only for the genre fans but for the entire make-up effects crew who normally have to watch their amazing achievements get sliced and diced for theatrical release. This is an important event for the horror genre and I hope the real horror fans support HATCHET II and help change the way genre films are released theatrically from this day forward. Kudos to Dark Sky Films and AMC theaters for truly honoring the spirit of old school American horror and doing this right. Gorehounds won’t know what hit them!

Earlier this week, the Hatchet folks released a “So NSFW Clip,” for the movie.  You can see it after the jump. (more…)

Elvira’s back (and front) are back!

Everyone’s favorite horror hostess is back and coming to a television station near you this weekend.

Elvira’s Movie Macabre returns to the small screen to bring you cheesy horror movies, bad puns and good old fashioned snark. (more…)

Man-Thing – the review

Whatever knows fear burns at the touch of the Man-Thing.

Believe it or not, there was a time when movies based on Marvel comics were a crap shoot.  Sure, they started out strong with the first X-Men, Spider-Man and the first two Blade movies.  But then, before a certain armored Avenger made his presence felt at the cineplex, things got bumpy.

Daredevil?  Not very good.

Hulk?  Ang Lee proved he had no idea how to make a comic book movie.

The Punisher?  Thomas Jane?  John Travolta?  Next.

Sure, they rebounded pretty well with X2 which I think still stands as one of their best, but it was followed by things like the first Fantastic Four movie and Elektra.

It was rough going at the House of (Movie) Ideas.

Enter Man-Thing.

What’s a Man-Thing you might ask?  The simple answer is he’s Marvel’s answer to DC’s Swamp Thing, although, I believe Man-Thing (let’s call him Manny from here on out) predates Swamp Thing by a year or two.  You want the more complex answer?  Read this, then get back to me.

It looked like Marvel was scrapping the bottom of the barrel, almost literally, to bring the muck monster to the big screen.  Things didn’t work out.  The movie was created as a direct to video release.  However, as superhero movies took off, the powers that be decided to schedule it for a Halloween release.  They wisely reconsidered and moved it back to the straight to video queue.

The movie was eventually picked up by SyFy (then Sci-Fi) as a “Sci-Fi Original” and has gained a bit of a cult following since then.

What does all this mean to you my dear reader(s)?

It means I stumbled across Man-Thing during last Saturday’s vegetative monster movie marathon on SyFy and was finally able to record  and watch the damned thing. (more…)

Coming Soon…LAKE PLACID 3

I know what you’re thinking.  I thought the same thing.

Wait, there was a Lake Placid 2?

Yes, kids, there was an now the second sequel to the 1999 cult classic about giant crocodiles terrorizing a small lakeside town is coming to home video.

The bad news?  No Betty White.

Scheduled for release on October 26, Lake Placid 3 promises “graphic violence and full frontal nudity.”

On second thought, maybe its a good thing that Betty White isn’t in this one.

For a look at what’s in store for you, check out the red band trailer after the jump.  NSFW! (more…)

We’re Looking Forward To…MONSTERS

Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and grow. In an effort to stem the destruction that resulted, half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain the massive creatures… Our story begins when a jaded US journalist (McNairy) begrudgingly agrees to find his boss’ daughter, a shaken American tourist (Able) and escort her through the infected zone to the safety of the US border.

Immigration subtext anyone?

Boy, this sounds right up our alley doesn’t it?

There’s no mention of luchadores, but they could be in the movie…right? (more…)

You Might Want to Check Out…WITHIN

Rachel Weiss can see evil spirits. She is a sweet girlwith a troubled soul caused by this unique gift. After witnessing the brutal killing of her mother, Rachel and her father look for a fresh start by moving to a small town. Rachel quickly warms to her new schoolteacher Abby Miller, and becomes ‘best friends’ with classmate Michelle Lowe.

When Michelle’s penchant for schoolyard pranks turns from goodnatured fun to potentially deadly, Rachel suspects that her friend may be less than friendly. Rachel’s visions could be the key to stopping a series of violent attacks against the town’s children and unlocking the puzzle behind a decade-old disappearance.

So reads the press release for the new movie Within which makes its debut this Saturday on Lifetime at 9pm EST.  Its a stark departure for the network that largely pioneered “chick flicks.”

Within won “Outstanding Feature Film” at the Big Bear Horror Film Festival, as well as awards at several other festivals. (more…)
