Friday LinkFrogging – 4/15/11

Greetings from the Land of ‘Geek kids.

Today would normally be Tax Day, but since Washington, D.C. is closed down for Emancipation Day (?) you’ve got until Monday to “render unto Caesar.”

Until then, why don’t you let us take your mind off all that with some links and cheesecake.

This week’s selection is the very rare double dip.  True, we’ve been featuring two pictures of our weekly selections for some time now, but today, for only the second time ever, we’ll be featuring two different ladies.

Why?

Simple really.

Scream 4 opens today and as Wes Craven attempts to resurrect his Ghostface slasher franchise, we thought we’d do our part by featuring the ladies most associated with the franchise.

First up, above, say hello to Courtney Cox.

The former Friend and current resident of Cougar Town (make your own joke.  They do.), Ms. Cox plays intrepid reporter Gale Weathers in the series.  She’s been stalked by the Ghostface killer and David Arquette.  She escaped the killer, but got knocked up and cheated on by Arquette.  I don’t think that would have happened if she’d stuck with Bat-Man.  He’s single-minded that way.

Recently, the paparazzi caught her in the nearly obligatory “nip slip” while on vacation.  Never one to miss an opportunity, David Letterman asked about the incident while showing the picture on his show earlier this week.  Good thing he’s a friend of Bat-Man.

That’s Michael Keaton kids.

Up next, we’ve got Neve Campbell.  Ms. Campbell plays Sidney Prescott, the de facto heroine of the Scream movies.  She also spent some time with the Salinger five and practicing her Craft.  Still, perhaps her most famous non-Screamy cinematic moment is likely her pool makeout with former cheesecake/Mrs. Sheen, Denise Richards in Wild Things.

That’s why they make the Google kids.

On to the links. (more…)

Bat-Tan

Can’t have the Dark Knight being pasty white now can we?

Friday LinkFrogging – 10/29/10

Don't even TRY to put Baby in the corner.

Its almost Halloween.

As Count Floyd would say “Ohhh…spooky kids.”

Seriously, is there a better holiday than Halloween.  You get to dress up in a costume and, depending on your predilictions and/or guts, live out your fantasies, all while begging for food.

Think about it, if the guy under the freeway with the cardboard sign rang your doorbell on November 1st, you’d call 9-1-1.  He does it one night before?  He’s a really authentic looking (and smelling) hobo.  Here, have some bite size Snickers.

Hell, you might even ask him to pose with your kids for a picture.

But, if there is anything we learned from the Firefly family, its that its not necessarily the scary hobos you have to look out for.

And with that rather ham-fisted segue, please say hello to this week’s cheesecake, Sherri Moon Zombie.

Sherri is probably best known for her work as Baby Firefly in House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects.  She also starred as the mother of Michael Myers in Rob’s two “reimagined” Halloween movies.

She’s laid pretty low since Halloween II, but after serving as Rob Zombie‘s wife and white trash muse for the last decade, we thought she’d be the perfect cheesecake for Halloween this year.

On to the links.

Friday LinkFrogging

salmaOn the eve of All Hallow’s Eve it is time once again for your GonzoGeek to take you LinkFrogging around the internet.

I had a pretty good idea when I suggested this to the guys that it might drive some traffic our way.  Turns out I was right.  Between the bunch of us we have some pretty eclectic tastes and the links reflect that.

Then again, it might just be the cheesecake.

Speaking of, say hello to Salma Hayek.  Well, more specifically say hello to Salma Hayek as Satanico Pandemonium in From Dusk ‘Til Dawn.  When Stephe and I decided to go Halloween with this week’s cheesecake we thought of some obvious choices like Elvira or Jamie Lee Curtis.  Kate Beckinsale was mentioned, but she’s already been served up.  Then we got on to vampires and Salma became our go to girl this week.

Now, on to the links. (more…)

“The Joker” – the review

thejoker

“You shouldn’t know what the Joker is thinking.” – Brian Azzarello, Wizard World Texas, November 8, 2008

I will admit, I bought “The Joker” to get it autographed at Wizard World.  With both the writer and the artist in attendance, it seemed like a good idea.  The deep discount I got at Barnes & Noble didn’t hurt.

That all be said, this is an amazing read.  Mr. Azzarello, the scribe behind the amazing modern noir of “100 Bullets” returns for a second stab at the Batman universe following his successful run in “Broken City.”

This time, the story is told from the point of view of a guy in the Joker’s gang, Jonny Frost.  As Mr. Azzarello said in his Wizard World panel, why would you want to be part of the Joker’s gang?  They always end up dead.

Gotham City and the Batman universe is reduced to the essential elements.  The only villians used are the ones that could reasonably fit into the modern crime vision of the author.  There is no Mr. Freeze or Poison Ivy, but there is the Penguin in his ”fixer” role, the Riddler as a dealer in contraband and Killer Croc as a hood tough with a bad skin condition.

And, if there’s a Joker, there is a Harley Quinn.  We first meet her as a pole dancer.  We later see her as Joker’s lover and primary enabler.  She’s also farther gone than the Joker.

As Jonny and the Joker amp up their crime spree, the bodies start to stack up.  Self-medicating along the way, the Joker takes back what he sees as his.  Johnny starts to see that his boss is not reformed as he claims, but rather is perhaps even crazier than ever before.

Of course, Bat-Man appears.  Its not until late, but even when he’s not in the panels, he’s clearly in the Joker’s thoughts.

I read this, in its entirety on the plane back from Wizard World and I plan to give it another read soon.  Its a classic Joker story in the same way that “Arkham Asylum” and “The Killing Joke” are.  It adds depth to a classic character without painting him into a corner.

Much has been made of the Joker’s clear resemblance to the Joker as played by Heath Ledger in “The Dark Knight.”  According to all reports, Mr. Bermejo had his version of the Joker down on paper before the movie ever hit.  Great minds think alike.

If you’re a Bat-Man fan, a Joker fan, or a fan of Mr. Azzarello give this book a shot.  If you’re none of those things, but enjoy a bloddy noir tale, give it shot.  If I still haven’t described you, give it a shot anyway.  You’ll enjoy it.  It’s a gritty, gruesome good time.
