LUCHA LIBRE THEATER – Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter

I remember the first time I saw a review for this movie on Badmovies.org.  I knew I wanted to see it, but knew the odds were long.

Imagine my surprise when I was digging through the available streaming options on Netflix and stumbled upon it again.  Into the queue it went and now I’m ready to review it.

The more pressing question is…are you ready to read this review?

Really?

Are you sure?

Okay, then let’s begin. (more…)

LUCHA LIBRE THEATER – Los Campeones Justicieros

Back in November, Stephe and I attended Wizard World Texas.  One of my great finds at the convention was a DVD containing a lucha libre double feature.

Meet your leading man

Meet your leading man

I’ve been wanting to review it every since, but one thing or another kept blocking my ability to sit down and watch the movie and properly review it.

That is until now.

Hold on to your hats kids, we are about to step into the surreal world of lucha libre films.  What’s that you may ask?  Its a movie from Mexico that features its most famous luchadors (wrestlers) in the role of superhero/detective/savior.  They face off against all kinds of world threatening menaces:  zombies, aliens, vampires, and, in this one, a mad scientist.

Let’s start the show shall we? (more…)

Wrestlemania Weekend – The Booker T. Legends of Wrestling FanFest

Welcome to the show

Welcome to the show

Coverage of GonzoGeek’s Wrestlemania weekend begins right here loyal reader(s).

Friday brought us the first ever Booker T. Legends of Wrestling Fan Fest.  Since Stephe wasn’t due in until Saturday, I took this one in by myself.  I drove downtown and parked with no problem.  Then I walked to the GRB.  What I found most amusing during my stroll was the occupants of the Convention Center.  First, the Texas Library Association was having a convention.  In the next hall it was the Gun Show.  Finally, it was Booker T and Ring of Honor.  Diversity?

Stood in line, picked up my tickets and went inside.  I was greeted with the picture above.  Pretty slim pickings.

There was one line of tables on the left side of the hall and another row of vendors on the right.  Otherwise there was a lot of empty space.  This surprised me.  I thought for sure Booker would put up a ring and give some of his students some time.  Guess I was wrong.

I had four photo ops in the first session.  I got in line and took my pictures.  Enjoy. (more…)

Wizard World Texas 2008 – How You Doing Daddy-O?

Me and Scott Adsit

Me and Scott Adsit

That’s not a hobbit.  That’s a hobo and a rabbit, but they’re making a hobbit. – Bender, “Bender’s Game.”
For the fifth year, Stephe and I ventured to the wilds of Arlington, Texas to take in the spectacle that is Wizard World.  This year was different in that, thanks to GonzoGeek, we were able to procure press passes.  That opened up a whole new level of cooperation from the attendees and vendors.

The other new wrinkle this year was WW’s merger with Texas FearFest.  This added a whole new demographic to the festivities.  It also added some previously unavailable stuff to buy.

Stephe and I both felt that WW had suffered the last couple of years.  Its the last convention of the season so its smaller.  Its farther from the NE home of most of the companies involved.  The lack of presence by DC and Marvel in recent years has been obvious and detrimental.

However, this year when we walked into the main room of the convention center we were pleasantly surprised.  It was full.  Celebrities, such as they are, lined the left wall.  There were convention regulars Lou Ferrigno and Virgil.  They were joined by the Honkytonk Man, Greg “the Hammer” Valentine, Peter Mayhew and a bunch of the girls from the new “American Gladiators.”

Turn the corner and there were the Suicide Girls in their scantily clad inked out glory. (more…)
