Friday LinkFrogging – 4/29/11

I came to a realization this week.

That realization?  That my kids are getting older and at some point I’m going to have to explain the noble pursuit that is GonzoGeek to them.

Sure, they understand that dear old dad and some of his friends have a website, but they don’t really understand what that means or involves.  It became even more apparent the other night when, upon looking at the forthcoming design of our update, they asked me why we had girls in bikinis on there.

That led us into a discussion of traffic and hits.  It also led to so seriously glazed eyes.

What?  Why yes, I did mention an update.  Thanks for paying attention.

We’ve been promising an updated website since the end of 2010 and now, dear reader(s), its arrival is imminent.  Imminent as in Monday I’m told.  When you drop by on Monday you should see a whole new look for us here at the ‘Geek.  Its a change we’re VERY excited about.

And that’s not our only big news.

We are currently in discussions with a certain columnist.  If things go well, he’ll be bringing you his musings on all things sporting and entertaining.

But wait!  There’s more.

Just this very morning we got confirmation that a quartet of your favorite Geeks will be attending Comic-Con International in San Diego (Whale’s Vagina for all you German speakers out there) in July.  More details on that in the coming weeks.  Just know that we’ve been planning that one for a while and we’re all VERY excited about the chance to attend and report on the premiere Geek event of the year.

Don’t worry, we won’t forget to dance with who brung us.

Cheesecake anyone?

This week’s selection comes from Aamir.  Here’s what he had to say about her…

This week’s Cheesecake is Anna “Aya” Stefanowicz, vocalist for the Polish band UNSUN.  Aya is married to Maurycy “Mauser” Stefanowicz, who is the guitar player for UNSUN and ex-member of the highly lauded Polish death metal outfit called VADER.  She’s got a great voice, is very easy on the eyes, and has a really cute Eastern European accent.  UNSUN are easily and quickly tagged with the “Gothic-Metal” stamp, but I feel they are a lot more accessible than that.  The music is heavy, but the melodies and arrangements are rooted in Pop sensibility.  The latest UNSUN record is called “Clinic For Dolls” and was released in October of 2010.  The production is killer sounding and the songs are catchy, really fun and kinda kitchy too…but who doesn’t like a little bit of cheese now and then.

Well done, Aamir.  Well done.

Cougar Blood?

Good afternoon kids.  I have a confession to make.  I am on a drug. It’s called Charlie Sheen. It’s not available. If you try it once, you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body.

I probably took more than anybody could survive. … I was bangin’ seven-gram rocks and finishing them because that’s how I roll, because I have one speed, one gear. … I’m different. I have a different constitution, I have a different brain, I have a different heart.  I got tiger blood, man.  Dying’s for fools, dying’s for amateurs.

Every day is just filled with just wins. All we do is put wins in the record books. We win so radically in our underwear before our first cup of coffee, it’s scary. People say it’s lonely at the top, but I sure like the view.

That being said,I’m tired of pretending like I’m not special. I’m tired of pretending like I’m not a total bitchin’ rock star from Mars.   I woke up and decided, you know, I’ve been kicked around. I’ve been criticized. I’ve been like the, ‘Ah, shucks’ guy with like this bitchin’ rockstar life. And I’m just finally going to completely embrace it, wrap both arms around it, and love it violently. And defend it violently through violent hatred.

I’m proud of what I’ve created. It was radical. I exposed people to magic. I exposed them to something they’re never otherwise going to see in their boring, normal lives. And I gave that to them. I may forget about them tomorrow, but they’ll live with that memory for the rest of their lives. And that’s a gift, man.

The run I was on made Sinatra, Flynn, Jagger, Richards, all of them just look like you know, droopy eyes armless children.

I’m proud of what I’ve created. It was radical. I exposed people to magic. I exposed them to something they’re never otherwise going to see in their boring, normal lives. And I gave that to them. I may forget about them tomorrow, but they’ll live with that memory for the rest of their lives. And that’s a gift, man

Which brings us to the subject of cheesecake, and this week’s rather obvious choice.  Say hello to Denise Richards.  She’s an ex-Mrs. Sheen.  In addition, she’s generally considered the worst Bond girl of all time.

Perhaps,  Charlie Sheen can, in his own special way, help us finish out Ms. Richards’ writeup?  Carlos?  “(She) shows up looking the way she does. Look at her. Wow! Everybody’s winning. Boom!”

Then he added, “I tried marriage. I’m 0 for 3 with the marriage thing. So, being a ballplayer — I believe in numbers. I’m not going 0 for 4. I’m not wearing a golden sombrero.”

Play ball Chaz!  Play ball!

Friday LinkFrogging – 2/18/11

Yeah...SportsWelcome to Friday kids.

I don’t know about you, but this weekend couldn’t have come any sooner.

If life is a juggling act, I’ve been struggling to keep all my balls in the air this week.

I’ll pause here whilst you make your own jokes.

(pause)

Okay, moving on.

Our ongoing cold snap has passed and left us with days in the 70s.  Perfect weather to bring out the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

I have to honest here.  I didn’t realize this thing was still such a big deal.  Of course, I’m the same guy who used last year’s covergirl as cheesecake last week so maybe I’m not quite as clueless as I’d like to pretend.

All that having been said, its time to introduce you to this week’s cheesecake, even though she really needs no introduction.

Say hello to “the Body,” Elle MacPherson.

That picture right up there is my first real memory of the Swimsuit Issue.

It was the Day of the SupermodelCindy Crawford was everywhere.  So were Kathey Ireland, Linda Evangelista and Rachel Hunter.  Everyone had their favorites.  Elle was mine.

She tried her hand at acting in movies like Sirens, If Lucy Fell and the underrated, The Edge.  She was also in Batman and Robin, but I think we can all agree that the less said about that the better.  She even appeared for a few episodes as Joey’s roommate/girlfriend on Friends.

These days she is the face and body of Elle MacPherson Intimates.  You can thank me for THAT link later.

Friday LinkFrogging – 10/8/10

Welcome back kids.

Another week in the books.  With them came the MLB playoffs.  Roy Halladay threw a no-hitter in the first game of the Phillies’ series with the Reds.  That’s gotta sting.  The Yankees are doing their annual pummeling of the Twins.  And, the Rangers are 9 innings away from eliminating the (Devil) Rays.

Sorry Matt.

Oh yeah, and Randy Moss got traded from the Patriots to the Vikings.  Let’s see if this makes Moss a better receiver and/or Brett Favre a better QB.

It’s a mad, mad, mad world kids.

Speaking of madness, say hello to this week’s cheesecake, Christina Hendricks.

Ms. Hendricks plays Joan, the real power behind the throne, on AMC’s critically acclaimed Mad Men.  She also showed up for a couple of episodes of GonzoGeek favorite, Life, to bedevil Adam Arkin.

While I’m a latecomer to the Mad Men party, I have to say the show is growing on me.  There is something watching the ugliness under the 60s version of the American Dream.  My wife and I are playing catch up thanks to Netflix whilst our trusty DVR collects season 4 for us.

As if that wasn’t enough geek cred for Ms. Hendricks, she was recently cast as the voice of Superman’s main squeeze, Lois Lane, in an upcoming DC animated movie.

And earlier this week, it was revealed, to nobody’s real suprise that Ms. Hendricks’ appeal hits all the demographics.  Everyone, it seems, digs a curvy redhead.

Friday LinkFrogging – 8/13/10

Deliver me...

Fools’ gold out of their mines
The girls are soaking wet
No tounge’s drier than mine
I’ll come when I get back

“Yah mule, yah!” – Yosemite Sam

Carrot? Stick? CHEESCAKE! It makes every day feel like Friday.

When Bruce first re-handed me the reigns of this august institution, Blake Lively was gonna be our girl. She had ‘geek cred, given her ‘Green Lantern’ casting, and had recently caught the full attention of yours truly while sitting on the Comic-Con panel for same. A quick internet search and….nothin’.  Well, not nothin’, but nothing that looked better than the Comic-Con pics themselves.

But then the wonders of the interwebz reminded me that the live-action movie adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ graphic novels opens this week, and who did my roving eye espy?: Ms. Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

MEW plays Ramona Flowers, the potential siren to Michael Cera’s good-guy-trapped-in-a-world-he-only-partially-made title character. But it’s hardly her first turn through GG-friendly territory. Since graduating from Disney’s ‘Sky High,’ she has appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Death Proof’ and as Bruce Willis’ daughter in ‘Live Free or Die Hard.’ Like your films more dramatic? Try her turns in ‘Factory Girl’ and Robert Kennedy pic ‘Bobby’ on for size.

And lest the casual geek decide that this whole ‘Scott Pilgrim….’ thing is just a bunch of greasy kid stuff, it should be pointed out that director/co-writer Edgar Wright’s previous credits include ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz.’

And now, if our new hostess will please pull the curtain…

On to the Links. Walk this way.

Friday LinkFrogging – 7/30/10

Maybe Nelly was right…

Its hot out there kids. Summer is in full swing and its getting harder and harder to cool off.

Its also been a hot month for us here at GonzoGeek.  Our traffic went through the roof thanks to folks looking for pictures of Katherine Heigl.  We thank each and every one of you who looked at this picture.

This week saw the debut of season 2 of Jersey Shore on MTV.  MTV finally worked out the last possible iteration of the The Real World idiom and has started moving the entire cast to a different city, presumably to spread the crabs around.

No, this doesn’t mean Snooki is going to be our cheesecake.  I wouldn’t do that to you.  Instead, I decided to go with a Jersey Girl who is much gentler on the eyes.

Say hello to the pride of Cherry Hill, New Jersey…Ali Larter.

She first jumped into our collective consciousness wearing a whipped cream bikini in Varsity Blues.  Then she spent a few seasons as America’s favorite schizo She-Hulk on Heroes.  Now expecting her first child, she’ll be seen next kicking zombie ass in Resident Evil:  Afterlife.

Friday LinkFrogging – 6/11/10

Oh what a week its been boys and girls.

Lots of good (albeit largely late) content on the mighty GG this week.

That leads us into our favorite weekly (and always timely) feature…LinkFrogging.

Yes, we’re back once again with a load of links to mystify your friends and neighbors with this weekend.

And, of course, no list of links would be complete without a slice of cheesecake.

This week proved to be a dilemma for yours truly.  With a pair of remakes opening in theaters this weekend, The Karate Kid and The A-Team, I was torn between a pair of contenders.

First, there’s Jessica Biel who stars in The A-Team as army officer charged with bringing in the gang that can’t shoot straight.

Then there was Elisabeth Shue, the love interest in the original Karate Kid movie.  She taught a whole generation a different application of “wax on, wax off.”

What’s a GonzoGeek to do?

I’ll tell you.

For the first time ever, you, dear reader, get two different slices of cake.

You can thank me later.

On with the links. (more…)

Friday LinkFrogging – 6/4/10

KILLER!

Back in the saddle again!

With all apologies to Gene Autry, I’m glad to be here once again to bring you our weekly linkfest.

Before I get too far along, I want to give a big thanks to Chris for covering for me last week.  I loved the coining of FOGG.  Well done sir.  Well done.

While I was unable to find any actual chupacabra, I did have a celebrity sighting of the 80s variety.  It seems the Bangles were staying at the same hotel I was and they ended up in the dining room with me and the rest of the expedition last Friday night.  Susanna Hoffs is holding up well true believers.

Before we give you the links, we have to give you a slice of cheesecake.  Don’t worry, I didn’t forget.

Say hello to Katherine Heigl.  Formerly of Grey’s Anatomy, Ms. Heigl returns to the big screen this weekend starring opposite Ashton Kutcher in Killers.  It will be interesting to see if she turns on Kutcher the way she turned on Judd Apatow after the success of Knocked Up.  Stay tuned, and in the meantime, on to the links. Friday LinkFrogging – 12/11/09

Welcome back kids. It has been quite a week here at homebase. I lost a load of links when I lost my PC. I’m not sure how that’s going to affect our final count today, but we’ll see.

We also welcome a new Geek to the herd this week. Aamir comes to us on a strong recommendation from Chris and we’re glad to have him in the fold. Look for him to start posting very soon.

And before we get to the links, it wouldn’t be LinkFrogging without our weekly slice of cheesecake. This week that cheesecake is Tina Fey. Love her or hate her, Tina is seeminly everywhere. Her take on Sarah Palin may have single-handedly submarined the former Alaska governor as a potential vice-presidential candidate. On a recent episode of David Letterman, when asked about a story that she was a virgin well into her 20′s her response was…”couldn’t give it away.”  It disarmed Letterman. That’s hard to do. Tina can be seen on NBC’s 30 Rock each Thursday night.

Friday LinkFrogging

Welcome, once again, to our weekly installment of fun finds on the internet.

This week, as every week, we serve up our links with a side of cheesecake.  Today’s selection is Nadine Velazquez who played everyone’s favorite exotic bouncer, Catalina, on My Name is Earl.  With this we bid a fond fairwell to Catalina, Earl and the rest of the denizens of Camden County.  Earl was just one of the victim’s of the Jay Leno experiment on NBC.  I’m still hoping karma nails Leno and Carson Daly is given that time slot.

Now, on to the links. (more…)
