Stephe and I have had many discussions about how the advent of the “line guy” artists in the 1990s all but killed the comic book industry.
Guys like Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane and Mark Silvestri tried to substitute overly busy drawings for story with varying results.
Yes, they were able to break away from Marvel and DC and form Image. Yes, they made a whole lot of money by doing so.
That being said, they still never learned to tell a good story. Most, if not all of their original”creations” were derivative and cliche.
Nowhere was that more evident that in the “work” of Rob Liefeld. Rather than make the case myself, I’m going to let the good folks over at Progressive Boink make it. They did it far more eloquently than I ever could.
If that doesn’t convince you, just Google Liefeld. The sheer volume of information on his “style” is mind-numbing.
We the fanboy nation have nobody but ourselves to blame for Liefeld. Shame on us all!
