‘Spoonman’: iPod First Anniversary #16

KEY LYRIC: All my friends are Indians
All my friends are brown and red, spoonman
All my friends are skeletons
They beat the rhythm with their bones, spoonman

Album: Soundgarden – ‘Superunknown’
Year: 1994
Producer: Michael Beinhorn
Mixed by: Brendan O’Brien

NOTES:  The biggest single off Superunknown. I always thought the second part of the lyrics above went: ‘all my friends are scared to dance/to feed the rhythm with their bones.’ Cornell’s one of my fave lyricists ever, but I still like my version better!  I also had the good fortune of spending 3 days with the band at Bad Animals during the mixing of this record, working on an article for Raw magazine.

The author back in the day. Bad Animals Studio, Seattle.

Below is a recent peformance of the song at the Crocodile in Seattle featuring a line-up of Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, Tad Doyle, Tom Morello, and Ben Shepherd
